Plot
Celaena hat sich gegen ihre Konkurrenten durchgesetzt und ist nun der offizielle Champion des Königs von Adarlan. Es ist nun ihre Aufgabe die Drahtzieher der Rebellengruppen auszuschalten. Doch sie warnt jene und lässt sie fliehen. Doch auch außerhalb dieser Zeit wird es für Celaena eng, Chaol der Führer der königlichen Garde fühlt sich immer mehr zu ihr hingezogen, doch auch Prinz Dorian ist noch im Schloss.
Charaktere
Die alten Charaktere werden weiter ausgespielt, so distanziert sich die Freundschaft zwischen Chaol und Dorian aufgrund von Celaena weiter. Celaena verbringt immer noch viel Zeit mit Nehemia der Prinzessin von Eyllwe.
Celaena wird nun immer mehr als Kriegerin gesehen, und ist nicht mehr das arme Mädchen aus den Minen von Endovier, die alles daran setzt ihre Freiheit zu bekommen. Sie hintergeht nun den König und verfolgt ihre eigenen Pläne.
Auch werden neue Charaktere eingeführt wie zum Beispiel der Türklopfer zur Gruft oder Archer, ein alter Freund von Celaena auf den diese angesetzt wurde.
Die Charaktere bilden auch nun ganz klar 2 Lager, die für den König und die gegen ihn. Im ersten Teil wirkte diese Aufteilung oftmals ein wenig unsicher, weil zum Beispiel Charaktere wie Chaol dem König zwar unterstanden jedoch einen gewissen Hass zeigten.

Das Buch spielt weiterhin im Königreich Adarlan auf einer Insel Erilea ,in einer fremden Welt. Diese Insel besitzt verschiedene Königreiche wie Adarlan, Terrasen und Eyllwe. Doch genauso taucht Wendlyn plötzlich auf, eine Insel bevölkert von Halb-Fae.

Das Cover ist auch wie im vorherigen Teil schon, in der deutschen Version dem amerikanischen angeglichen. Zu sehen ist mit rotem Rauch eine Frau. Diese schwingt ein Schwert.
Schreibstil
Wie beim letzten Buch auch ist Maas gut zu folgen. Die Spannung der Handlung bleibt konstant erhalten und das Buch ist flüssig zu lesen. Ein einzelnes Kapitel ist oftmals noch in mehrere kurze Abschnitte geteilt. Wenn in einem Kapitel ein Paar vorkommt, wie zum Beispiel Chaol und Celaena, dann kann die Erzählerrolle innerhalb eines Kapitels zwischen den beiden springen.
Fazit
Alles in Allem ein gelungener 2. Teil zu einem großartigen Auftakt einer Fantasyreihe. Die Charaktere bleiben wandelbar und interessant, die Handlung scheint ständig neue Wendungen zu nehmen. Celaena ist eine großartige Protagonistin. Sie lässt sich in kein bestimmtes Schema stecken, in einem Moment ist sie mit Chaol zerbrechlich und emotional, gefühlvoll und im nächsten Moment wieder die kaltblütige Killerin.
Ich finde das Setting wunderschön gewählt. Celaena die sich Intrigen in einem gläsernen Schloss stellen muss. Eigentlich steht gläsern doch für durchsichtig und durchschaubar, nicht aber hier. Jeder dieser Charaktere könnte sich letztendlich doch noch als Spion des Königs herausstellen, das macht die Sache spannend.

All in all a successful 2nd part to a great start of a fantasy series. The characters remain changeable and interesting, the plot seems constantly to take new twists. Celaena is a great protagonist. She can't be in any particular scheme stuck in a moment she is with Chaol fragile and emotional, soulful and the next moment the cold-blooded killer.
I think the setting is chosen beautifully. Celaena must ask intrigues in a glass castle. Glasses actually stands for clear and transparent, but not here. Each of these characters could still prove to be a spy of the king ultimately, that makes things exciting
